Months after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada accused India’s government of plotting a murder on Canadian soil — plunging diplomatic relations between the two countries to their lowest level ever — the first arrests in the killing, which came on Friday, did little to demystify the basis of his claim. The police didn’t offer clues or present any evidence that India had orchestrated the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh nationalist leader who was gunned down at the temple he led in Surrey, British Columbia, in June. What they did say was that three Indian men had committed the killing and that an investigation into India’s role was ongoing. Before the arrests, Indian officials had maintained that Canada was trying to drag New Delhi into what it described as essentially a rivalry between gangs whose members were long wanted for crimes back in India. After the arrests, a report from the CBC, Canada’s public broadcasting corporation, based on anonymous sources, also said the suspects belonged to an Indian criminal gang.

This lets the government tackle specific jobs and projects quickly without all the steps of regular government hiring and bureaucratic obstacles. Thomson ReutersThere are a wide range of large government contracting companies that the government regularly makes deals with. John Breth, 40, worked in government contracting roles for 12 years before starting his own contracting company. If awarded the contract, you have to meet specific requirements set by the government, which may involve getting clearances or certifications. Once you understand the landscape better, you'll be able to recognize which jobs you qualify for and define your path forward.

Many other business software providers have looked to quickly introduce tools that utilize generative AI, or update their existing ones with it. The utilization of AI more broadly is nothing new for CFOs, with tools like predictive AI being used by most companies to help with core tasks. But this new wave of generative AI presents a different opportunity, and Weaver said the focus on generative AI across industries has frantically increased in the last year. However, he added that there is a challenge when it comes to generative AI tools: creating auditable processes or being able to visually inspect the processes to ensure the data or conclusions are correct. Hrncirik said that the message within Microsoft is that generative AI is a "new skill that we have to develop."

While some optimists focus on AI's benefits in education, others fear that using AI in classrooms could catalyze cheating and misinformation. This is where AI literacy can be useful. Created within the Stanford Graduate School of Education, CRAFT is a collaborative effort of Stanford education researchers, software developers, and curriculum developers. Lee also told BI that AI literacy in classrooms "should involve recognition of where AI can be effective and where it requires extra vigilance." He said the school also hopes to grow CRAFT's teacher codesign fellowship through which fellows develop AI literacy lessons.

Cities and towns in both states, they could see, penalize or outright prohibit duplexes and other forms of housing that bring down prices and help prevent urban sprawl. Enacting a more permissive set of zoning rules gave everyone something they wanted. The software-as-a-service provider is "aggressively pursuing our ambition to absolutely be an AI-first company," Chris Bedi, the chief digital-information officer at ServiceNow, told Business Insider. We started experimenting and doing stuff with gen AI super early. I would say underestimating how quickly gen AI would progress.

And I think that's just a testament to the world being really big and messy, and that these systems are still evolving, they're still really in their infancy. That may be a thing that's useful in your work, or maybe a thing that's useful in your life, or it may just be a fun thing – it may just be that you create a funny GPT and it's a cool thing to have. High-level, we always knew that we wanted to have a structure that, at its core, retained the original OpenAI – the OpenAI nonprofit. So that's the first thing to understand, I think, about OpenAI: It's not a normal company in that sense. We have shared that we have an initial board now, and expect to add more board membersWhat's the general mood like at the company right now?

Lab models of human embryos raise hopes and concerns
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( Katie Hunt | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +14 min
From the moment sperm fuses with an egg, human embryo development involves a string of complex and little understood processes. What happens during human embryo development, particularly in the crucial first month, remains largely unknown. However, 14 days is an important milestone because it is when permitted lab research on cultured human embryos routinely ends. He said, in the future, it might be possible to go as far as 40 days with human embryo models. Some in the field envision a “tipping point” wherein human embryo models might be afforded some protection like those surrounding human embryos, as scientific advances diminish the differences between the embryo models and their real-life counterparts.

But crucially, the event could also shed light on the political feasibility of a broad, sweeping AI law, setting expectations for what Congress may achieve. IBM CEO Arvind Krishna will also seek to “demystify” a widely held impression that AI development is done only by a handful of companies like OpenAI or Google, Padilla said. Some authors have sued OpenAI over those claims, while others have asked in an open letter to be paid by AI companies. New AI legislation could also serve as a potential backstop to voluntary commitments that some AI companies made to the Biden administration earlier this year to ensure their AI models undergo outside testing before they are released to the public.
